Gas Station Dance: AI Generator vs Filming It Yourself

Should you film the gas station dance or use an AI generator? A practical comparison of effort, cost, results and when each makes sense.

Updated Oct 10, 2026

There are two ways to make a gas station dance video: film it for real, or use an AI generator. Both can work. Which one fits depends on what you have access to, how much time you want to spend, and whether you need real footage.

Quick recap of the format, the same one we build on gasstationdance.app: the clip is 15 seconds and has three shots. A dance on an empty lot at dusk, a handheld selfie with a gas station behind, and a one-take step out of a car. The cuts land on the beat of the trending sound. Any version, filmed or generated, has to hit those three beats. More on where it came from on the trend page.

What filming it yourself needs

To recreate the real format you need:

  • An empty lot for the dance and a gas station for the selfie, both places you are allowed to film
  • Dusk light, which gives you roughly one good window a day
  • An expensive-looking car for the last shot, and someone to step out of it
  • A friend to film the dance and take the selfie
  • A routine you can actually dance, and enough takes to get it right
  • An editing app to cut the three shots to the beat of the sound

That is a lot of coordination for 15 seconds. Filming at a real business also usually needs permission, so ask the station staff before you set up. If you want to go this way, our shot-by-shot filming tutorial walks through each shot.

What an AI generator needs

  • Three photos: a full-body photo for the dancer, a clear face photo for the selfie, and a full-body photo for the car exit. Or one good photo used for all three.
  • Credits: 100 for 720P Standard, 150 for 1080P Pro
  • 5 to 8 minutes of rendering, and you can close the page meanwhile

The generator recreates the three shots from your photos. You do not need a location, a car, good light or a camera operator. Finished videos wait in My videos, and if a render fails, the credits are refunded automatically. The quality of the result depends a lot on the photos, so read the best photos for a gas station dance AI video before you upload.

Retakes and changes

When filming, a missed step or a bad angle means going back out and shooting again, often the next evening for the same light. With the generator, a retake means swapping a photo or generating again. Each new video costs credits, so it is worth getting the photos right the first time.

When filming makes sense

Choose real filming if you want authentic footage, you enjoy making it with friends, you already have the car and the spot, or you want to show off your own dancing. A filmed version is also yours to remake as often as you like at no extra cost.

When the AI version makes sense

Choose an AI generator if you want to join the trend fast, you do not have the location or the car, you are not confident dancing on camera, or you want a group version with friends who are not in the same place. Each friend sends one photo, and each one gets a shot.

What it costs on the AI side

Payment is one-time through Stripe. There is no subscription and no free generation, and credits never expire.

  • Single Video, $8.90: 100 credits, enough for one 720P video. Videos are stored for 30 days.
  • Creator, $24.90: 300 credits. Videos are stored for 1 year.
  • Studio, $74.90: 1,000 credits. Videos are stored for 1 year.

A note on honesty

An AI gas station dance video is not real footage. Label it as AI-generated if the platform asks, and do not present it as real in a way meant to mislead. Only use photos of yourself or of people who agreed to appear. The generator is for people 18 and older, and it is not affiliated with TikTok.

Not sure yet? The gas station dance video page shows the original next to a clip made with the generator, so you can compare before you decide.

Try the AI version

The Gas Station Dance AI Generator makes the clip from three photos. The cuts land where the original's do, so the trending sound lines up when you add it on TikTok.
